A Korea JoongAng Daily report on how indie K-beauty sunscreen brands became global category leaders.

Why Korean Sunscreens Are Dominating the Global Market

Why this matters

Korean sunscreens are no longer a niche interest. Brands like Beauty of Joseon, Round Lab, and Dr.G have gone from small independent labels to household names in the U.S., largely off the strength of a single product category: sunscreen. The reason Korean formulations feel so different comes down to ingredients. No new sunscreen ingredients have been approved by the FDA since 1999, while Korean manufacturers have access to modern UV filters like Tinosorb S, Tinosorb M, Uvinul A Plus and Uvinul T150 that allow for smoother, more photostable textures without the white cast. But that regulatory gap cuts both ways. Korean brands that want to sell sunscreen in the U.S. have to reformulate entirely to meet FDA requirements, often resulting in products that feel and perform differently than their Korean counterparts. The U.S. market is massive and the demand is clearly there, but the path to getting products on American shelves legally is anything but simple.

Noedal takeaway

This is exactly the kind of challenge Noedal was built to solve. Korean beauty brands entering the U.S. are already navigating MoCRA compliance for their cosmetics lineup. Sunscreens add a whole other layer because the FDA classifies them as OTC drugs, which means a completely separate registration and compliance process. Stack California CSCP and Prop 65 on top of that, and you're looking at a regulatory workload that can stall even the most in-demand brands. Noedal automates compliance across these different frameworks so brands can focus on what they're already great at: making products people want to buy. The platform handles ingredient collection, manufacturer coordination, and ongoing regulatory monitoring so nothing falls through the cracks. The opportunity in the U.S. is only getting bigger, but it belongs to the brands that get compliance right from the start.
